PROOFREADING
The most common types of proofreading are linguistic proofreading, semantic proofreading, substantive proofreading and pre-print proofreading.
Linguistic proofreading
Proofreading of the target text
(grammar, orthography, style)
Linguistic proofreading is always carried out by a professional, mother-tongued proof reader. If a text is in Slovak, proofreading will be provided by a professional Slovak linguist.
Semantic proofreading
Proofreading comparing the source and target texts
This type of proofreading is normally carried out by an experienced translator mastering both the source and the target language. The translation is checked against the source material to ensure the message is maintained during the transfer from one language to another.
Substantive proofreading
Proofreading of terminology
Terminology proofreading is usually necessary when dealing with texts of specific topics. Proofreading is carried out by a specialist in the given area, e.g. a medical text is proofread by a doctor-translator.
Pre-print proofreading
Graphic proofreading
Pre-print proofreading includes the elimination of possible errors made during the typesetting or graphic design process. The main purpose is to check how the text looks in a specific graphic environment, and to make final modifications (e.g. splitting words at the end of the line), so that the corrections can be implemented in the final design of the document to be published or printed.
How to order proofreading
To provide the best proofreading quality, the following information from you may be very useful:
- is your text a translation from a different language or is it an original text written by somebody?
- from what language and what original is the text translated;
- who translated the text or what was their capacity to complete such translation;
- if reference documents are available (i.e. parallel texts of a similar nature to provide a source for terminology).
- what kind of proofreading do you require?
- who will be a reader of the final text? (foreign management of a company, native speaker, Briton or American, German or Austrian, etc.)
Other important information necessary for making a price quote:
- your desired turnaround time;
- your contact details for further questions (most importantly your phone number);
- your invoice data (permanent address is sufficient for natural persons).
After you submit your demand, we will prepare our price quote for you and send it to your e-mail. If you agree with our price quote, confirm it, please, and we will consider your confirmation as a binding order and will start with the proofreading immediately.
